English-Speaking Therapist in Athens | Ioanna Galanis, LCMFT / US-licensed systemic therapist (LCMFT, University of Maryland, College Park) offering counseling in English for individuals, couples, families and expats. In-person in Athens or online worldwide.
Living abroad can be a transformative experience, but it often comes with challenges that are difficult to navigate alone. Moving between countries, cultures, languages, and ways of life can affect our sense of identity, belonging, relationships, and emotional wellbeing. Feelings of loneliness, anxiety, homesickness, uncertainty, or disconnection are common, even when life abroad appears successful from the outside.
Having lived, studied, and worked internationally for many years, I understand both personally and professionally the complexity of adapting to a new environment while trying to maintain a sense of self. As a Licensed Clinical Marriage and Family Therapist (LCMFT), trained at the University of Maryland in the United States, I work with individuals navigating cultural transitions, immigration-related stress, identity questions, relationship challenges, and major life changes.
Whether you are adjusting to life in a new country, balancing multiple cultural identities, navigating an international relationship, or simply looking for a space where your unique experience is understood, therapy can help you feel more grounded, resilient, and connected to yourself.
Sometimes, finding your place in a new country begins with finding your place within yourself.

About Ioanna & Your First Session
I’m Ioanna Galanis, a licensed systemic psychotherapist (LCMFT) based in Athens. I hold an MSc in Marriage and Family Therapy from the University of Maryland, and I work with individuals and couples both in person and online, in English and Greek. My approach is systemic and relational: I see difficulties not as something “wrong” with you, but as patterns shaped by your relationships, history and current context — and together we find room to change them.
Who I work with
I support adults and couples navigating anxiety, life transitions, relationship difficulties, and the effects of past experiences. I also work extensively with expats and international clients in Greece — people adjusting to a new country, managing distance from family, or simply looking for therapy in their own language.
What a first session looks like
The first session is a conversation, not a commitment. We talk about what brings you here, what you’d like to be different, and how I work — so you can decide whether it feels like the right fit. There’s no pressure to continue.
